AFAIK, the latest boot.bin v1.7 can boot to another user.bin if the current one broke. For example, the system should run the user2.bin after OTA, but there is something wrong in the user2.bin. Try "AT+RESTORE" command to initialize first before testing. It always can solve some strange problems.

Do you mean that you cannot read GPIO? Maybe you should have a try with the latest AT firmware. Mine works fine.

The only thing I know is that you should "make clean" after compiling user1.bin, and then to compile user2.bin.
Or maybe you can dump flash to check if the new firmware is downloaded correctly.

There is a demo, but it was uploaded 2 years ago, not sure if it can still work now :? . But you can have a try.

1.5.4 seems to be a very old version. Maybe you can have a try with the latest SDK https://github.com/espressif/ESP8266_NONOS_SDK.

Maybe due to the flash size mismatching.
Which bin files are downloaded into your flash, and have you selected the correct flash size while downloading?
