WiFi Stability issues with non-os SDK 1.4 and 1.5

Postby DavidDPD » Wed Jan 13, 2016 4:07 am

I can't remember the exact issue with 1.4.0, but when it came out, I had to roll back to 1.3.0 to have consistent, stable performance. (It was likely this same wifi issue.)

I finally resolved my issues last night with SDK 1.5.0 and the ESP-12E boards, by rolling back to 1.3.0. In 1.5.0, when the ESP-12E is in station mode, and connects to the SSID, within in 10-15 seconds after boot, it drops of the network (stops responding to pings), and starts reporting bcn_timeouts. Eventually, it dissociate from the access point, and reconnect. After which it seems to be pretty stable.

The Access point is on a clean channel (despite having a lot of 2.4 GHz APs in the area), Signal is running between -30 to -40 dBm, and Noise is running ~ -95dBm (on the access point).

The AP is TP-Link TL-WDR3600 v1, running OpenWrt Chaos Calmer 15.05 / LuCI (git-15.248.30277-3836b45).

Rolling back to SDK 1.3.0 avoids this issue all together and seems significantly more stable.

EDIT : Additionally - ESP Save With Protect doesn't seem to work correctly on 1.5.0 after first reboot.

I would love to help debug this, however since the SDK libraries seems to be closed, and no additional debugging functions, I'm at a loss what else to do.

Hi,

Sorry that I do not really understand your test steps. Is it as below ?

Step 1. ESP8266 runs as station-only mode.
Step 2. ESP8266 connects to router "TL-WDR3600".
Step 3. Do nothing, just wait a while. ESP8266 will disconnects to the router ? At this time, could other stations connect to the router ?

Please correct me if I misunderstood it. Thanks.

Not sure if this will illustrate the issue. Serial output below. Running my own code, which is open source (BSD-licencesd), https://github.com/daviddpd/dpdChatFabric

with user_config.h :

Code: Select all

#define STA_DEFAULT_NETWORK 1
#define SSID "demo"
#define SSID_PASSWORD "demo1234"

#define CONFIG_AP_SWITCH 0
#define CONFIG_STA_SWITCH 1

Here is a video screen capture ( duration: 3min 30sec ). This is constant, reproducible behavior with SDK 1.5.0. SDK 1.3.0 does not exhibit this behavior. However, in 1.5.0, after this initial disconnect, it seems to stay connected.

Hi,

Please have a try with the latest ESP8266_NONOS_SDK_V1.5.1.

If your problem is still unsolved, please feel free to let us know.

Hi!

Any luck resolving this? :)
It feels like it might (mayby!) touch the issue I'm having: viewtopic.php?f=66&t=2203
I have sometimes wifi, sometimes not, using 1.4.0 and any higher firmware on a ESP-12E, works fine on 1.3.0 and lower.

Cheers!

Hi.

My code have the same instability, too.
I am using the SDK 1.5.4.1.

In STATION mode, the switch between routers is not quickly done.

I'm glad other are seeing the issues too. I see the same issue in 1.5.4 (just re-tested).

2.0.0 is completely unusable ... it won't even boot code ... just endless garbage on the UART out.

@ESP_Faye - can someone look into this ? Seems like a pretty wide issue.

Would really LOVE if you guys would open source all the code in the libraries - so the community can help debug and fix issues like this.

This is really strange. Confirming my issue. Exact same code works fine in 1.3.x, but in 1.4.x and 1.5.x - After RESET, bcn_timout - testing with channels 1,2,3,4 ... aways gets caught in a look of connect/bcn_timout.

If I switch channels of the AP without a reboot of the ESP8266 (ESP is in STATION mode only) - in SDK 1.5.4 ... it reconnects and is then stable. Then if I restart the ESP, I get into the ban_timout loop again.
