If your flash size is 4Mbit,please upload using NON-BOOT MODE bin(refered to esp_iot_sdk_v1.4.0\bin\at\readme.txt):
eagle.flash.bin:0x00000
eagle.irom0text.bin:0x40000
blank.bin : 0x3e000& 0x7e000
esp_init_data_default.bin(optional): 0x7c000

I would like to update the firmware of my ESP8266 in boot mode. I downloaded the current ESP download tool and the "AT_v0.50_on_esp_iot_sdk_v1.4.0_150918.zip" firmware.
The AT+RST shows me:
2nd boot version: 1.2
SPI speed: 40 Mhz
SPI Mode : QIO
SPI flash size: 4Mbit

For boot mode there is no entry for 4Mbit Flash size. Which bin files do I have to download to which addresses to update to version 1.4?
