when 8266 in smartconfig procedure can i start a soft timer

Hi everyone,i want to use a soft timer to twinkle a led when 8266 in the smartconfig ,but i found when 8266 in the smartconfig procedure, the led was not worked.
So i'm not clear can other task can be running when 8266 in smartconfig?
