system_adc_read when WiFi radio disabled?

The system_adc_read call doesn't seem to work when the WiFi radio is disabled.

Can verify this by doing a system_deep_sleep_set_option(4) to disable the radio on wakeup, then a system_deep_sleep, and on wake up system_adc_read always just returns 1024.

Is there a way around that, or is it a bug, or a known limitation?

I've been trying with the 1.5.1 SDK. Its not trivial to move up to 1.5.3 right now - has something changed between 1.5.1 and 1.5.3 that might have fixed this?
