esp_now_send return values

What are the return values for esp_now_send? I've seen -3, -5, and -6, and I don't know what any of those mean. The documentation is not helpful either, stating only than non-zero values mean failure. Could someone help me out?

And does anything need to be done before initializing esp_now? How do I need to configure wifi for ESP Now to work?
