ESP-IDF toolchain installations broken

I've tried every "Getting Started" recipe on the Web for installing an ESP32 or ESP-IDF toolchain, on Windows and on Ubuntu -- not one of them worked correctly, due to typos, broken links, misspellings, path problems, obsolescence, dependency hell, and the like. I built the cross toolchain successfully, but it couldn't find and run the examples. Is there any current, failsafe guide to bringing up the environment which just works? I've wasted too much time by now to pursue it further without a dependable guide.
