ESP8266 crashes Randomly and does not come up or restart on its own

Postby Cherry » Sat Sep 16, 2017 4:55 am

Hi Team,

My ESP8266 module runs fine for some days and after that some times looks like it crashes, I cannot ping the IP address of the device.

On hard reboot, it comes up again, and I am able to ping the IP address of the device.

Ideal expectation is even if ESP8266 is crashed for some reason with the help of hard ware watch dog or software watch dog, it should restart again it self and work properly. Why is it expecting a hard reboot.

Can you kindly suggest what might be the root cause of the problem. What are the chances for the modules to go in to such situations and why watch dog timers could not help to make the module up and running and what are the chances module expects hard reboot in run time environment. Kindly suggest.

Thanks.

Hi,

You may please provide a little more information about "crash".

It might not be because the module get crashed, but because your module get disconnected from the ap or routers that you failed to ping the module. Normally once disconnected from the ap/router, the module will re-connect it automatically. However, some users of esp8266 modules such as esp-01 or esp-12 say they often find that the module will repeat re-connect automatically and then disconnect shortly, once the module get disconnected. And they have to reboot the module to fix the issue. If this is the case of yours, you could find the repeative re-connect/disconnect log printed out on the uart normally. If the repeative re-connection/disconnection is the cause of your failure to ping, you may have to check the hardware of the modules or the rf configurations.

Normally if it is a crash, the module would reboot to normal operation with the exception code printed on uart during reboot.

Hope it would be helpful

Hi YimingLi,

Thanks for your immediate response. Appreciate if you can provide support on the following.

If my device fails to connect to access point, it will try to re connect and work properly, but here I am seeing continuously fatal exception (0) and it will never come up.

Ideally even if it says fatal exception, it should recover and reboot but until hard reboot is done, it does not come up. This is really strange, can you please help me on the same.

Please find the screenshot attached. when does fatal exception 0 occurs and why it does not reboot automatically and why it expects hard reboot. This is really strange. Kindly help.

Thanks,Regards,
Cherry.
