Ad-Hoc WiFi mode?

Is it possible to enable Ad-Hoc Wifi mode and create or join unmanaged networks with the ESP8266? The documentation doesn't mention IBSS, Ad-Hoc or non-infrastructure modes. Having an efficient way to have multiple nearby devices communicate over a broadcast channel seems like a common use case for these system.
