ESP-12e performance outdoor

Postby xul » Fri Dec 30, 2016 9:43 pm

I have encountered a strange problem that I wrote a program running a websocket server on esp-12e chip to control a toy plane. It works quite well inside house. But when I take it outdoor, I can't connect to the chip anymore even the chip is just beside the computer. The error message is: ERR_INTERNET_DISCONNECTED.

Also I had test a program that control the build-in led via tcp connection. It's very fast inside house. but if is outdoor, some time it takes several seconds or need retry many times.

My question is how to solve the problem that outdoor?

Also I want to know if the esp-12e chip is suitable for the case that control a toy plane?

Thank you for your help!

What hardware are you using? Is it an ESP-12E or something? Or is it a custom board you built yourself?
The antenna must be properly matched for ESP8266 to work well, so using standard modules is a good idea. And for outdoor use, an RP-SMA antenna is a good idea.

ERR_INTERNET_DISCONNECTED is the error on the computer end? Or are you using two ESP8266, one on remote end and one on flight?

I'm really novice on this felid and I made a mistake that talk about esp-12e as a chip. Actually I'm using "D1-mini nodemcu", It seems that it's a esp-12e wifi module with usb uploading circuit. The core processor of esp-12e module is esp8266 and it contains a PCB antenna. Later I'll use esp-12e directly instead of using "D1-mini nodemcu" to reduce weight. My aim is to control a toy plane using mobile phone. While debugging I'm using chorme as websocket client on computer end. So the error message is from computer end.

It's very strange for me that it has different performance at different place.

Maybe it's too heavy to use an RP-SMA antenna on the plane. I'll try to extend the PCB antenna on the esp-12e module.

Thank you very much for your suggestion.

See if you are able to get a good performance, do keep me posted.
There are some drone projects with ESP8266 and PCB antenna, I recall seeing some on Twitter and the radio performance seemed just fine.

Using starling is a probably your best bet. Youll get good performance and there is a large community of developers using it so you will get good support for your questions.

Using standard modules is a good idea.
