Why so much spam using personal messaging

I've been getting a lot of spam emails (many in russian) using the personal messaging feature of the forum. Isn't there a way to clamp down on spammers? Probably disallow PMing till the user becomes an established user.

Quite an issue with spam lately. We don't want to make it very difficult and long to sign up before posting a question, so we end up getting slammed with spam. I will notify the forum admins, thanks for the message!

well clearly you need to, since the current policy isn't working. genuine users will bear the pain for some initial postings.

I registered recently and the first thing I got, not even any response to some of my queries in the forum, was PM spawn messages... in some cirilic language.
